Even in times of drought, adding a shade tree to your lawn or commercial landscape is never a bad idea. Trees provide habitat for wildlife, cool off your yard or building space, and provide beneficial air filtration and prevent erosion and wasted water run off. Below is a selection of best drought tolerant shade trees for Western Colorado.
Kentucky Coffee Trees are fast-growing shade trees. They’re pest free and work well in our dry, arid environment. While some dislike the pods that form on male trees, you can opt for a female, or espresso tree to get the same lovely tree with beautiful fall color without the pods.

Sensation Box Elders and other types of Box Elder trees are another great option. These fast-growing trees won’t leave a mess in your yard and are hearty and used to our dry and hot environment.

Oak varieties, like Scrub Oak and Bur Oak, also will perform well in larger yards. These can grow larger than you might think, so providing plenty of space to expand is crucial. They are extremely hardy and make great shade trees for bigger lawns and park or recreational areas.
