If you’ve been wondering what’s missing from your backyard garden design, it could be that it’s too one-dimensional. Maybe you have a great looking green lawn, but that’s it. Perhaps you have a zen xeriscaped yard with some perennial flowering bushes, but that’s it. Maybe you’re just looking for a few ways to set your backyard apart. Hardscape may be the solution. Adding a pathway, firepit, or even rock wall can make a big difference in the look and feel of your backyard space.
Our first of three hardscape ideas for your backyard is a fire pit. Fire pits come in a whole range of sizes and styles and require very little installation work. Make sure you’ve got plenty of space around the pit with rock or sand and keep it 10-15 feet from your home or other structures.

Next, and slightly more difficult depending on the terrain, is adding a walkway of rock or pavers. You can add a brick walking path around the edge of the yard, or even just down two sides. If you have grass you can dig up as much as possible and fill in around the pavers with pea gravel or even mulch. Alternatively, you can leave the grass between the pavers and just trim it with your weed eater.

Finally, consider adding a rock wall or raised garden area to your backyard. Even a short wall or narrow set of raised beds can make a huge difference in your backyard aethetics. No longer is it just flat and green, it’s got style and oomph! This does require more work than either of the first two options, but at Maple Leaf Landscaping, we’d be glad to help!
