Fall Lawn and Garden Tips for Western Colorado

As morning temperatures start to fall, it’s time to think about the changing seasons from Summer to Fall as well. Right now is prime time for ripe produce, beautiful sunflowers, a second blooming of some of your wildflowers, and time to consider what to do with your garden for fall. Start with these fall lawn and garden tips for Western Colorado.

First, you’ll want to keep mowing your grass right up until the first hard frost. The grass will keep growing until then, so be sure to give it the maintenance and watering that it needs as well. It’s best to send your lawn into fall and winter in healthy condition, with plenty of water and nutrients to get it through the winter.

This is why it’s also important to fertilize your grass in the fall. Not only will this help your lawn recover from the stress of a hot and dry summer, it will help your spring lawn be greener too! Giving your lawn a good fertilizing before winter is like a bear eating before hibernation: It helps your lawn have energy for restoration and growth over the winter.

While fall isn’t the best time for harsh pruning, for most plants anyway, you can take the time to clean up dead and damaged branches. Trim and neaten your flowering shrubs and small trees before winter to make sure dead branches don’t cause problems when snow or ice falls.

Finally, make sure to mulch around your perennial bushes for winter and around your trees too. Like the grass, these will benefit from fertilization before winter sets in.
