Spring Lawn Care Tips

Spring weather in Grand Junction and on the Western Slope is a great mix of anybody’s guess. Some days everything is wilting from heat, other days we’re stringing lights in the fruit trees to keep the buds from freezing. Rain can last for an entire day or not show up for 14 days. This is a crucial time for your plants and your lawn. With these spring lawn care tips, your lawn will make it through the tumultuous spring temperature fluctuations with ease.

First, take some time to clean up your lawn and plant areas. Rake up excess leaves, clear away sticks and limbs that might have fallen, and check for any signs of damage over the winter.

Next, once the danger of freezing temps has passed and your sprinkler is back up and running, set a spring watering schedule. Once or twice a week is probably all you’ll need at first, unless the temperatures stay HOT for a while or we have a long dry spell. Watch the grass and see how it’s fairing and adjust accordingly.

Then, if you’ve been having problems with your grass staying healthy, consider a soil test. Spring is a great time to do this and our local extension office can help with testing and explain the results. From this you’ll know what to add to amend your soil for a healthier lawn for years to come.

Once you see your lawn starting to green up a bit, but before it really takes off, add a fertilizer to your lawn. This will give your lawn the minerals and nutrients it needs to really get a strong start to the year.

Finally, seed any bare patches and keep those moist until the grass starts to grow. Mow for the first time of the season when the grass is 3-4 inches high. We hope these spring lawn care tips help you start the season with a lush and beautiful lawn!
